16th July 2026 – Post-Show Review, Critique & Latest Developments in Bonsai

July’s meeting is a reflective and forward-looking session, focusing on trees that members exhibited at recent shows. This is an opportunity to review what worked well, what could be improved, and where decisions may have limited results. Honest analysis is encouraged, with the aim of strengthening future show preparation and tree development.

The evening will be assisted by Malcolm Hughes, who will help guide discussion and critique. Members will explore presentation choices, tree health, styling decisions, and overall impact from a show perspective. This constructive review process helps turn exhibition experience into long-term improvement.

About Malcolm Hughes

Malcolm Hughes is one of the most respected figures in the UK bonsai community, with a lifelong commitment to the art that spans over four decades. We are delighted to welcome him to Redditch once again. He has been actively involved in bonsai since the mid-1970s and has contributed significantly to the growth and maturity of the hobby at both regional and national levels.

His influence extends beyond clubs and workshops: Malcolm was elected President of the European Bonsai Association in 1995, a role that reflects his international standing within the bonsai world. He is also an accredited judge with the Royal Horticultural Society, underscoring his deep horticultural expertise as well as artistic insight.

Together with his wife Kath, Malcolm founded the South Staffs Bonsai Society in 1988, helping to establish one of the Midlands’ most active local clubs. Under his ongoing involvement as a guest speaker and mentor, the society has become known for high-quality displays and continued member engagement.

Beyond club leadership, Malcolm has shared his knowledge through writing, talks, and judging at shows across the UK. His experience and measured approach make him a sought-after voice for critique and guidance — especially in post-show analysis and tree development discussions.

Back to the July 2026 meeting…

Members are encouraged to bring the trees they exhibited, along with any photos taken during the show. Comparing how a tree looked on the bench versus in the studio setting can reveal valuable insights into display, balance, and refinement. Discussion will focus on practical takeaways rather than criticism for its own sake.

The session will also cover recent developments in bonsai, including evolving styling trends, horticultural approaches, and modern exhibition standards. This helps members stay informed about how bonsai practice continues to change and where traditional principles still hold firm.

Please bring your exhibited trees, notebooks, and any reference material or photographs from the show. Basic tools are optional, but preparation notes and questions are encouraged to make the critique as valuable and targeted as possible.

All members are encouraged to attend. If you have questions about bringing trees, show critique, or the format of the evening, please email chair@redditchbonsai.co.uk or secretary@redditchbonsai.co.uk.
