21st May 2026 – Development Update, Tree Critique & Show Preparation

May’s meeting focuses on reviewing and updating the progress of trees that members brought in for development in January. This is an opportunity to showcase the progress of your bonsai, receive constructive feedback, and fine-tune your trees in preparation for upcoming shows.

The evening will be assisted by David Cheshire, who will provide guidance on growth management, styling, and techniques to enhance your trees’ aesthetic and horticultural development. His insights help members make practical, informed decisions for their ongoing bonsai projects.

A good turnout of members old an new gathered at Webheath on Thursday to welcome our old friend David Cheshire from Baginton.

The evening involved a short and informative talk by David about preparing trees and pots for showing as the society is joining with the Midland Bonsai at its show at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens on 7th June.

Thereafter members spent time putting David’s advice into practice and he gave individual  advice to all who needed it.

A new member, Thomas Chilton, arrived with an enormous and obviously very old Japanese Hornbeam which he had found lurking at the bottom of his grandfather’s garden. This tree created much interest and following advice being given upon its future care and maintenance we shall look forward to seeing it again.

We look forward to seeing you all at the show!

Richard Gilkes. Sec., Redditch Bonsai.

Members are encouraged to bring any trees they have been working on since January. The session will include critique of members’ trees, offering personalized feedback, suggestions for refinement, and advice on how to overcome challenges. This helps members improve both technical skills and artistic vision.

As the season progresses, this meeting is also an ideal moment to prepare trees for upcoming shows. Members will discuss presentation, seasonal styling, and any adjustments needed to bring their trees to show-ready condition.

Please bring your trees, relevant tools (wire cutters, scissors, root hooks), and notebooks or photos documenting growth progress. Engaging actively in discussion and critique ensures you gain maximum benefit from this interactive session.

All members are encouraged to attend. If you have questions about the session or preparing your trees, please email chair@redditchbonsai.co.uk or secretary@redditchbonsai.co.uk.
