15th January 2026 – Tree Design & Development Planning Evening

This January meeting is focused on one of the most important (and often overlooked) stages of bonsai development: clear, intentional design planning. Members are encouraged to bring along one or two trees that they would like to actively develop over the course of 2026. The aim of the evening is not rushed work, but thoughtful discussion and long-term decision-making.

Too many bonsai stall because early design decisions are made too quickly or without a clear end goal. This session is designed to slow that process down. By analysing trunk lines, nebari, branch options, and future refinement paths, members will leave with a structured development plan that can guide work across multiple seasons rather than reacting year by year.

The evening will be assisted by David Cheshire, who will help members evaluate their material, identify strengths and weaknesses, and explore alternative design directions. Expect open discussion, constructive critique, and practical advice grounded in realistic horticulture rather than theory alone.

This is a highly interactive meeting, so members are strongly encouraged to bring trees that are at a genuine decision point — pre-bonsai, early training material, or trees that feel “stuck”. Bringing photographs of past stages or reference images can also be helpful when discussing future direction and long-term refinement.

Please remember to bring any relevant tools such as notebooks, pencils, turntables, wire gauges, or reference photos. While no heavy workshop work is planned, having basic tools and materials to hand will help you get the most value from the discussion and planning process.

All members are encouraged to attend. If you have any questions ahead of the meeting, or would like to check whether your tree is suitable, please email chair@redditchbonsai.co.uk or secretary@redditchbonsai.co.uk.

About Redditch Bonsai Society

Redditch Bonsai Society (RBS) is a friendly and practical bonsai club serving enthusiasts across Redditch and the wider Midlands. The society welcomes members of all experience levels, from complete beginners to advanced practitioners, with a strong focus on shared learning and hands-on development.

RBS meetings combine demonstrations, workshops, critiques, and informal discussion to help members build both technical skill and horticultural understanding. Emphasis is placed on long-term tree health, realistic development timelines, and applying proven bonsai principles rather than chasing quick results.

Regular guest demonstrators, experienced internal mentors, and themed evenings ensure that members are exposed to a wide range of styles, species, and techniques throughout the year. The society also encourages members to bring their own trees for advice and constructive feedback.

Any tree that is at a decision point is suitable — pre-bonsai, early training material, or trees that feel stalled. One or two trees per member is ideal.

This evening focuses on planning and design rather than heavy workshop work. Minor adjustments or demonstrations may occur, but the primary goal is clarity of direction.
